I decided that I better do a post about the basics of essential oils. Much of what I have learned, I learned from classes taught by Jacque Gurney. Jacque Gurney teaches her classses to empower women (men too) to be able to help thier families and then for us to share that information to help others. You can learn more about Jacque Gurney here. (I talked with her yesterday and she will be putting up a new class schedule soon. I will post the class schedule as soon as I get it).
Essential Oils Direct Application-
Dirctly applying essential oils to the skin is an easy and effective way to use the essential oils. This is a highly effective way to use the oil since essential oils can easily pass through the lipid membranes and into cell walls.
Applying to the bottoms of your feet- This is the fastest way to get the oils into your system. If you take the oils internally the oils must be processed through the liver first. Our feet contain large pores (800 per square inch) and many nerve endings. It takes 3 seconds for the oil to past through the skin and into the blood. With-in 3-5 minutes it will be circulated through your entire body. Amazing!
Applying the oils to other areas of the body- Essential oils can be applied directly to the area of the body that is bothering you or someone you are trying to help. With a few exceptions- Never put oils directly into your ears -even diluted ones. Oils can be diluted and used in your eyes, but never use neet (follow recomended directions for this use). Your eyes will be blurry for a few minutes and then they will clear up.
Testing the oils-Not all oils are effective for everyone. Before you start applying the oils first remember more is not better, 1-2 drops are usually enough. When using a new oil that you have not used before, test a drop on a small area of your skin. Wait 10-20 minutes to see how your body responds before applying (layering) a second oil. The longer the oils are on your skin the better they will be absorbed. Do not wash them off right away or at all. Use of a compress will help the oils to not evaporate.
Layering- You can use multiple oils to help with different symptoms of an illness. Apply the oils one at a time. Using one oil at a time massage into area or feet until the area is dry, then apply your next oil, until it is abosorbed, repeat process as desired.
Diluting the oils-
Some Essential oils need to be diluted even for adults. Never apply Oregano Neet (neet means to use right out of the bottle.) because it is a hot oil and can cause 3rd degree burns.
Use on children- Birth-24 months- dilute 75%
Under 36 months- dilute 50%
Under 10 years- dilute 25%
Elderly or very sick - revert back to child dilutions
Dispensing the oils- Take the bottle in your hand with the lid upright and roll it a few times in between your hands. Next hold the bottle 1-2 inches above your hand or cup or capsule or mixing bottle (which ever application you are doing) and gentle tip the bottle to allow the oil to drip out. All oils are not the same consistency. Some pour out rather quickly and some are really pretty thick and might take a shake of the bottle to get a drop out. Always err on the side of caution until you learn an oils consistency.
TIP: I love to use the dropper bottles. This gives you an exact way to dispense one drop at a time. This also allows you to split your bottle of essential oil so you can keep some in more that one are of your house. Or as a friend found out the bottles can break and then youe precious oil is wasted...luckliy her bottle was almost empty. - E-mail me if you need bottles, droppers, atomizers, or other bottles.
Note- Hot oils like oregano, cinnamon bark, and thyme will melt the plastic dropper on our bottle so they must be stored upright in the bottle.
How to dilute- Essential oil are diluted by using a carrier oil. Carrier oils include, Grape seed oil,
hohoba oil, olive oil, coconut oil, or even vegetable oils if that is all you have in a dire situation.
Essential oils are not water soluible. Mixing them with water will not be effective. If you accidently get them in your eyes or your skin is burning use a carrier oil-water will not help!
*TIP: I gave my husband an oregano capsule when he was sick and he burped it up into his throat. His throat was burning and he was in diestress. I told him to drink some oil, but he said that is sick...so he ate a table spoon of peanut butter and the burning stopped almost instantly.
Essential oils are processed by our body every 4-6 hours. If you are treating a condition or symptom, the oils will need to be reapplied at these time schedules. Some people just use the oils in the morning and then reapply them at night. If I were treating an accute condition, I would apply more frquently at the 4-6 hour mark.
